Most brick houses in DC area are ugly, I can understand if the house has nice architectural detail, it's a historic house, or a well executed newer colonial. But when we are talking about ramblers and split levels and tiny ugly brick colonials, they are better off painted, period. They just look so much nicer. Actually Georgetown and Old town Alexandria have tons of old brick homes painted nice pastel colors, this makes these neighborhoods extremely attractive.

White wash does not involve using paint! That's called painting, even if you use white paint and dilute it with water, that is not real white wash. White wash uses lime and is a centuries old technique used on buildings around the world. It's eco friendly, inexpensive, and easy, once you learn the technique. And no amount of faux painting will ever achieve it's timeless look.

It's *rustic*. It's like Farmhouse or Shabby Chic but for the outside of your house.

I'm surprised by how common it is in this area. Driving DD to school this morning I counted at least 10 houses in a 5 minute radius of our house. I wish I could convince DH to whitewash, but our house is a brick/siding hybrid. He'd probably declare it country, like he did my vote to gravel our driveway.
