In Fairfax, you can test but not use it. So, my child qualifies for services in another school but we opted to keep her at her base school and use the services they have available there. But, if we ever wanted to switch her to the other school, we would have that option.

These are kids, for crying out loud. Kudos to you for not going along with the suggestion.

Not only haven't you read the entire thread, you don't know what the heck you are talking about.

A bartender can and does recommend drinks--that's their job. A Teacher is SO within their rights to recommend to a parent ANYTHING having to do with their child's education--that's their job. A parent can take that information and go with it...or not. Parents have the final choice. I would be seriously ticked off at my child's teacher if she knew something that would help my child learn

Has anyone even been around GT kids? GT kids are kids and should be allowed to play. They ARE playing. Again, here's someone perpetuating the myth that GT kids are joyless robots who have no fun.

I'm pretty sure they were making a joke, not trying to add a substantive opinion to the thread.

Whoops, posted too soon. I would be seriously ticked off at my child's teacher if they knew something that could help my child's progress and didn't let me know about it!

OP: Third. Which is another thing. I didn't do G&T until middle school growing up, so not sure what the point is at the elementary grades.

This in bold. I think it's too much work too soon in elem school. Let the kids have fun and play. There will be enough time to get serious in middle and high school. Besides, it's not like they are teaching algebra in elem school.

Kids are sponges in elementary school and generally love learning.

I'd rather my kid learn how to work hard in school and develop good study habits at the age where it is fun and cool to work hard, rather than starting it in JH when everything is a cause for an eye roll or in high school where academics compete with activities and socializing. The AAP class helps to build those skills that will serve our kid well when academics become truly rigorous.
