PP poster here (mom with friend "Julie"). These things just make me roll my eyes or now are some sort of a joke. For the times that these things are said, there are hundreds of great things my mom says.

Julie says her grandkids don't do that (insert whatever "that" is - having tantrums, problems sleeping as an infant, crying, etc.). My mom tells her best friend (Julie) EVERYTHING I tell my mom and then my mom tells me what Julie says. Sigh. I don't really tell my mom as much as I used to - or I make sure to tell her it's between the two of us and not to tell her friends.

You and your brother never did that (apparantly we were sleeping through the night as of Day 1) - I don't know what to tell you.

I've never had any friends with a child like yours (throwing tantrums). She (DD) is really unique.

My mother has actually passed away and I adored her, but this thread is making me smile. She would NEVER intentionally insult me but one of my favorite things she said was "but that's what you look like" when I commented that a picture of me was bad. I wasn't saying it was a bad likeness, I was saying I didn't like the way I looked in it! It always cracked me up that she said that.

Mom my goes on and on about how "materialistic" people are "nowadays". Because I work and she SAHM'd. She tells me we live "high on the hog".

Um, I remember the new cars, the Ethan Allen Furniture, the home remodel, the oriental rugs, the crystal and china. Vacations and eating out. Private school for me and sis. And despite all that, yes, they could afford for her to stay home. So how the hell is it that we kids NOW are materialistic???

Argh, that quote above should be the one about leaving your husband with a young girl bc you know how men are. Don't know what happened there.

Step-mom - "It's too bad the kids have to sit in car seats now"; "When my kids were young, I used whiskey to soothe teething pain", etc. Umm - thanks mom, but your kids are pretty screwed up, so not really going to take a lot of parenting advice from you

I HATE this. My most hated thing ever and my mom does it constantly. She is also a fan of saying, whenever I put ANY demand on DH, like, "Can you please bring me a diaper?" or "Will you remember to put sunscreen on Billy while you're out?":

IF YOU KEEP NAGGING HIM LIKE THAT, HE WILL LEAVE YOU!

Which is always followed with:

I JUST DON'T WANT YOU TO SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE ALONE!

When I went out of town for a girls weekend (first one in 3 years!) and had a babysitter come help out my husband for a few hours a day with my two kids, under 3: You really shouldn't leave your husband alone with a young woman-you know how men are. You should stay home and be with your family."

"You make your children sleep too much-they can't even enjoy life" This was because I put them down for their one afternoon nap when she was there.

To my 3 year old who was playing with his trashtruck and said he was a trashman, "No-you don't want to be a trashman. You want to be a doctor." And, then said to me, "Why are you encouraging him to be a trashman?"

When I was having severe PPD with obsessional thinking about self harm/harming the baby, my mom told me about how a relative of mind hanged herself after giving birth. !!!

My mother got her HSD and then was a SAHM. But now in her old age she is "becoming political". She trolls the web and listens to NPR and thinks she's knowledgeable about things. Listening to her is cringe worthy. I can't tell you how many times I have had to point her to Snopes in response to the crap she forwards. And I am not supposed to, or example, drink coke, buy on amazon, or use tin foil for various political reasons (whatever).

The opposite of my super liberal mother is my super conservative step mom who lectures me every time I see her about how the "moosleems" are taking over the country and the hijab is a threat to our way of life. "As a self-proclaimed FEMINIST you should really be worried about this. " She says we should ban headscarves like France. Yeah, MY definitiion of Feminism is we don't tell women what they have to wear (or not).

My mother warns me every time I talk to her on the phone to look both ways before I cross a street. In parking lots, she holds my arm. So I don't walk in front of a car.

Have never been hit by a car. Never had any close calls. I am 29. !!!

The answers to these are simple. She is from a different time, where people pronounced some words differently, they were expected to be more formal and neat in public, and it was accepted to put down other races in public.

The saddest part of this whole thread is that we will all be talked about this way when we are old too, I don't know anyone who doesn't have an annoying mother, so I don't think any of us are going to be able to escape this

Starting with "you don't want to close all your blinds? You know people can see in here?" really? I my dining room? What do I care if they can see in here? We never even use it?

You have such big legs like your father's family, at least they're shapely...I just don't know why you have weight problems though, when I had your brother I weighed 105 lbs with boots and a belt on.

She was on FB for a while and told me that the FB "install" "slowed down her computer" - we all wanted her off of FB so I agreed with her and "uninstalled" it.
