How 'bout, "I hate bumper stickers." Works for us.

I don't hate bumper stickers. I don't have one, but have at times (usually around election time). No school ones yet, but it seems really self-centered to say I wouldn't want to do something because of what other seemingly sensitive (or based on some of the DCUM posts, crazy and paranoid) adults read into it. when I see a sticker I just think someone in the family is proud to be part of a community. If my kid is proud of his school, I think that's great and would want to encourage that sentiment. That's true whatever the school is.

Just a villa? We put one at the gate to our 17th century chateau in France.

Sometimes, opinions change over time. My kid insisted that we put the sticker on when she was accepted to her school for sixth grade--she was incredibly excited about going there. So we did, even though such expressions struck us as pretentious and a distancing mechanism from the vast majority of our friends and neighbors whose kids go to public schools. She grew to hate that school--with the exception of a couple of wonderful teachers--and she was just admitted to a more elite, "big three" school, or whatever you call it.

But this time, we're not doing the sticker. It's a pain in the ass to get these things off your car--she get wear a t-shirt instead--very easy to take on and off.

I don't have any other stickers on my car because I don't generally feel the need to make a point of who I am while I'm driving around in my car. I realized I thought it was kind of stupid for me to have that sticker on the car so I took it off. Also, I didn't want to be excessively worried about how my driving, or my car, or how I look while driving my car might be "representing the school." That thought had never occurred to me. I'm a good driver and everything but I don't want to have to think about it so much.

Fair enough. I put stickers from my kids' schools (public and private) on because I like the schools, love my kids, and it makes them feel good. If someone else wants to misinterpret it, that is their issue not mine.

So, it's okay to show pride in your school, but not if you go to a school that DCUMers have social or other status issues with? Talk about self-centered. Bumper stickers aren't about the parents or bragging, they are a fun way of kids showing pride in their community. But, here on DCUM, it's always all about the parents, and how the whole world (especially parents at the "Big 3") does everything just to be condescending.

My DS is at Beauvoir. What am I supposed to say if he wants to put a sticker on our car? That there are some adults who are offended by it? That it is ok to have a sticker if you are a student at some schools, but there is something about his school that makes it different? I remember being shy about telling people where I went to college because it was an ivy and it seemed like bragging to me. Then a friend told me that she found it much more obnoxious that I would assume that anyone would have any views (jealousy, admiration, whatever) about where I went to school. She was right.

Not insecure. I just don't like to brag. I have always thought those stickers that say your kid is on the honor roll are obnoxious. I didn't realize my school sticker was pretty much the same thing.
