My son just turned 4 months and is 20 pounds. His height and weight are off the charts but his pediatrician is not at all concerned (He is proportioned very well). She doesn't recommend starting him on solids just yet and does recommend giving him water, but she is unconcerned none-the-less.

feed him if he's hungry. it's waaaaay too early to think about diets! my dd had 4 rolls on each arm and cankles at 7 mos. at 2 yrs, she is 10th percentile for weight.

Not the PP and this is my first post in this thread, but I am also a huge fan of that book and it has guided my feeding of my now 3 and 6 year olds. It is a great perspective on control issues and eating. Do you have any recommendations for books that disagree with her principles?

i think you're feeding healthy foods and taking care not to overdo feedings (i.e. not feeding for every problem) then that's the best you can do, right?

the babies i get concerned about are the ones who are so ginormous and rolypoly they can't do anything and the parents just feed them without a thought to intake or healthiness of the food.

i have a 22lb 6 month old and he sits up and moves around just fine. we don't cut back his food but i take care to watch how much he's eating, i never mix formula/breastmilk with the rice cereals (only water) and we give him lots of "exercise" time.

I am the OP fo this post. Weird to see it pop up again.

My DC is now 14m and is still a pretty big dude. He is 98% in weight and 66% in height, wearing 24mo clothes that are too tight in the waist and too long in the leg. He is nowhere near walking yet, but gets around pretty good. I do not worry about it much anymore, since he is moving.

I just keep feeding him healthy foods and hold out hope that things will even out a bit once he starts walking.

I guess I am the only one then in the DC metro area that had a very chubby baby who turned into a plump preschooler and is now a borderline-fat grade schooler (90% weight, 60%tile height).


There was no elongation going on over the past 8 years

DS2 is 7 mos 21 lbs and wearing 12 mos and in some cases 18 mos. He's in the 95th percentile for weight and 75th for height. He eats like crazy. We just bumped him to size 4 diapers.

Rest assured, once your guy becomes mobile he will slim down. DS1 was the same way. He's 3 1/2 now and weighs 41 lbs but he is solid as a rock and never ever stops moving. You may need to accept that the chunkster might not be able to wear certain brands of clothes that run slim.

I agree that diapers and clothing sizes don't tell the whole story without knowing DS's height. DD was 98th percentile in height and 90th in weight at one year and ped said it was fine. She has been in size 4 diapers forever, and wears lots of 2T clothes and even 3T shirts. But he also said DD should slide down the weight chart as she gets older because the percentile charts are population-based and therefore have been increasingly skewed by overweight kids (not so much a problem with babies). So a healthy very tall preschooler should maybe be 98th in height and 80th in weight, something like that. I haven't checked if this is accurate, but that's what he said.
