When does LCPS take the IAAT?

My son is not considered for the advanced math in grade 6, so he won't be able to take Iowa test . Is there any other way he can take or consider for the Iowa test.

I have a 5th grader in LCPS who just received his raw scores and will take Accelerated 6/7 Math. I have a child in College who followed the same track and Did BC Calc and AP statistics Sr. year and did very well. My Jr. followed the same track and is in AB Calc. and struggling. My 3rd child is in 8th grade and now has 2 HS math credits as well and is doing very very well. My son will follow the same track. I think you have to really know your childs abilities before you push them ahead. My college student was the youngest girl in her math classes her 4 years in HS. She was pushed ahead of her peers in elementary school in CA where she went to 1st grade math in K. She did very well and continues to do well. I have one child in my local MS that has been taking Algebra in 5th grade. He left Elementary school every other day to attend the MS (HS credit) Alg. class. This year he is in Geometry in 6th and seems to be doing well. Consider their support system and emotional well being. Is this something they want?

Yes, in Loudoun the IAAT is taken in 5th, not 6th as in FCPS. So the bar is a little lower. It is for placement in an accelerated 6/7 math, with Algebra I in 7th grade. Only a raw score is given.

I believe the pp in Loudon is testing for entry to PRE-algebra, not algebra as they use the IAAT for in FCPS.

Are you really caring about college credit in 6th grade? My DS asked about this tonight.... he is AAP FFX County, and debating taking this or that elective next year (8th grade) and was talking about what would give him HS credit (he already has several HS credit courses). I told him it doesn't matter for HS -- it's kind of like prison... you are there from 8 AM to 3 PM regardless. College might matter, but I am pretty sure you can't take any class in 6th grade that will give you college credit, other than a college class. But if you have a kid that smart --- e.g., he is at Montgomery or NOVA Community College in 6th grade ... do you really think those credits will be a material issue later? Doubt it ...

Great chart. Now, what about the child of the parent who wants algebra in 6th grade? What's left? What will count for college credit? That depends on the college. Example: Purdue University does not accept AP computer science AP scores for college credit. People need to take the long range academic planning approach for all of high school, not just what they can take or feel they should take in 6th grade.

I have not heard about kids completing algebra in 6th grade. For kids who take algebra I in 7th grade, the progression is similar to the following:
Middle school: Algebra I, geometry
High school: Algebra 2, Precalc, Calc BC (AP course), AP statistics, and or AP computer science.

Based on my DC's experience, it is not a good idea to push too hard too early. They tend to do great up until precalc. At precalc, the materials are much harder and require higher level abstract thinking but younger age may make it harder. But once they pass precalc, it will be easier for calc BC and on.

For all of you who are looking at your child taking algebra in 6th grade, I have one question. What do you foresee as their math course progression through their senior year of high school? Algebra---geometry---algebra2---precalc---Calc---???---????

Colleges want to see math all years, including senior year. If they truly are a math prodigy and want to go into a math field, then go for it. If not, then remember at least in FCPS those high school level classes count on their GPA no matter when they are taken.

My son is in 5th grade and in LCPS -- he got a 57 on the IAAT, raw score. Apparently you need a 33 to be able to take pre-Algebra in 6th grade. I am wondering if he is a candidate for Algebra in 6th grade, and also if anyone knows the percentile for a 57. He's in 5th grade, but is young for his age -- he is still 10. Thank you.
