It sounds like either an inept of corrupt 8a contractor, probably affiliated with political cronies/contract kings like Jeffrey Thompson or folks in the Bowser/ex-Barry network or Vincent Orange.

I spoke with one of there telemarketers. I do owe the taxes but they said I am defraud the the IRS for 75,000. I said what are talking about. I calling in reference to DC taxes owed. I said I have a payment plan with the IRS. They said it was revoked already and they already called a officer to have me locked up. I don't even owe the IRS about 1000 and they are on agreement. Then I threatened them with Better Business Bureau. They say that I have no rights to do so. I said you are harassing me. I already spoken to a lady with MuniServices and she said explain your financial situation. So I explained it and the guy was treating me to have me locked up. Smh

OP, just so you know. I had a similar problem a few years ago with exact same thing - business tax for a rental property.

Long (and I do mean long) story short, I had luckily paid with a check and was able to produce the canceled check. It took several months and an unbelievable number of hours on the phone with very unhelpful people who work for the DC government.

Seriously, I had to take time off of work to deal with this. Good luck.

I just got almost the exact same notice. That I owe for income taxes in for 2010, penalties and fees of about 4k for a 1k debt. I lived in DC for one year, and definitely not in 2010. When I called, they told me to just mail/fax or email my income tax documentation as proof I didn't live there.

So, has anyone just ignored these letters?

I've since separated and moved three times and this scary letter showed up at my parent's home (still used as my permanent address) telling me I owe 6k and Im just wondering what their recourse is if I ignore the letter since they aren't trying very hard to get in touch with me. (I AM in the phone book)

They just called me regarding an ex-boyfriend's account. On the 4th try, I finally connected with Jacqueline, who wouldn't tell me what or who they are. I said that since she had MY cell phone number, I deserved to know, and she told me that they had to dig and search for my number.

If they continue to call me, I will not be happy.

I just rec'd a letter stating I owe $8k+ ($4k tax and $4k interest/penalties) from 2010. I lived in DC then, but on a military base working at the Pentagon and as a Florida resident. SO this is bogus, but I don't like the fact they have my personal info.

I am located in California and MuniServices has branches all over the US. They are a collections agency as stated. If you are contacted by them, the best course of action is to contact your city agency directly. In our case they are trying to collect money from us so that they can get furnish us with a business license for renting property. We went directly to the city to get our license and settle all of the paperwork. Why pay 50% more to a company when you can pay the city directly at half the price? This company approaches cities and tells them they will increase the cities revenue by seeking out ways to or businesses, individuals, etc, so they can generate income for themselves and the cities.

You can add my experience to the others. Be careful before you send a check to anyone you don't know. I had the very same thing happened. Thank God I was smart enough to check it out because it made no sense to me. Jackie

Update: MuniServices are a legitimate collection agency contracted by DC. They sent me a bill for "unpaid" 2009 income tax while I was stationed in the NCR, living in Washington, even though I'm active military and have legal residency in another state. After contacting a tax accountant for advice, I called MuniServices, Mr. James Moore answered and was very pleasant as I let him know the deal. He kindly gave me instructions for how to send MuniServices the corrected info. I also called DC office of tax and revenue, was directed to a revenue agent on whose voicemail I left a message. DC agent called back within a day. I sent them proof of legal residency in another state along with a signed/dated statement to this effect and they sent me an email back confirming my file had been cleared and that I owed no taxes to DC. Took about a day, all told. I lost a bit of sleep the first night, catastrophized a bit, etc., before calling DC and the collections agency the next day. But, now that it's cleared up, am surprised just how easy it was to resolve.

Active-duty Service Members are protected by The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Your State-of-Legal Residence is where you pay taxes. If this is not DC, then, you do not pay them taxes. But, you'll probably need to send DC and MuniServices a certified letter (most likely from your commander on letterhead) stating you're active-duty and that your legal residence is in another state. Check with your accountant/tax attorney for details.

I had the same letter..zero tax liability but a 1400 penalty that rose to 6000 with interest. Contacted my accountant and a tax lawyer. Account and I placed separate calls to DC Tax and Revenue. I owed nothing and that lady at DC Tax and Revenue put it in writing. Negligent and unacceptable company which should be highlighted by a local news channel.
