I know. Nothing FCPS does will be good enough, and DCUM will continue to rail against “equity” and whatnot. While FCPS currently acknowledged the need to ensure more 5-day school weeks and adjust the calendar accordingly, DCUM will find another way to complain about it and attribute it to the evil “equity”. I heard some guy at work complaining that his child (who was taking world history) was learning about Africa and should instead be focused on history directly impacting the US. Really? We shouldn't learn about the world around us even if it doesn’t directly affect us? SMDH.
Of course we need World History --to include Africa.
However, we also need basic US History. I'm not sure the kids are getting that as they should. I saw little of that with my kids.
"Back in the day" before Black History month, elementary school was focused on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Now, the halls are full of pictures of important Black Americans. Nothing wrong with that, but the problem is that the kids are no longer learning about George and Abe.
And, we spend January on MLK Jr. So, that is basically two months of Black History.
We need to also teach about our Founders and the settlement of the United States. Yes, we need to include the "warts" but we seem to be focusing more on that than the establishment of a republic.
Gee, did you hear Valerie Jarrett's acknowledgement that the Obama library was built on 'stolen land?" That is how they kicked off the celebration.
