When we were very young adults my parents paid. That shifted over the years to splitting evenly by family. At the end, my siblings and I paid for the rental. We could afford it and, as a PP mentioned, they paid enough while we were growing up.

We pay when we take my parents. They don’t have much money; they’re not poor but we have a lot more. I guess if we ever did anything with my mother in law she would pay because I think she has a lot of money (it’s a little unclear — my fil made a ton in the market and left her well set up but she has terrible money sense so it’s not clear if she’s rich or if she’s spent it all). But she’s crazy so we don’t vacation with her. When we go out to dinner with her, she pays. My spouse feels like he’s paying emotionally to have dinner with her.

We take my inlaws and though my FIL loves to tell everyone how wealthy he is, he doesn't pay for us. We pay for everyone and then get reimbursed from them for their room.

I’m actually Gen X and my parents are 78-basically the oldest boomers.

If we invite them we pay for them. If they invite us we pay our own way as we have more money. There has never been an argument over it.

Im a 50 yo who pays for my parents. They are retired now but previously had professional jobs. But I’ve noticed it’s far more typical for the millennials to get subsidized by their parents. And of course their parents often also pay for their vacation expenses.

If my parents join us at the beach house we've paid for, they'll take us out to dinner some nights. When we do an extended family trip with all of my siblings and kids (multi-generational trip) to a destination, they pay if we need to fly there and lodging (Alaskan cruise, Yellowstone), we trade off paying for meals out

I pay for my side of the family (mom + siblings). Mom has no money, lives in a tiny house and won’t visit me, so I usually rent a beach house near her for a week. That way we don’t have to cram into her house and she gets a little vacation.

We’ve only vacationed with DH’s parents once. They chose dates and paid, but were annoyed that the dates they chose didn’t work well for everyone and people couldn’t stay the full week.

With DH’s siblings, we try to split costs. But one sibling tends to “forget” to pay.

My parents will die with millions in the bank, whereas I am just about on target for retirement and emergency and educational savings. Not a ton left over after I fund the various savings accounts. They know this, and encourage it. So they pay. But they're paying because they want our company; they don't just hand over cash or big-ticket gifts. Like they never bought me a car or gave me a down payment or anything.

And when we're at the beach house they paid for, I buy most of the groceries and whatnot.

We would never invite parents on trip with us if it meant we had to pay for everything! Sheesh. We think we're being nice inviting them to come with us on a trip and they also are just happy to be included.

It's income dependent. We can afford to do it, so we do. If we couldn't then it wouldn't happen. Our families can't afford to travel with is the way we like and we wouldn't want to downgrade to something more in their budget. But when they come to visit us, they pay for their own airfare.

If this happened, I would pay. With my sanity.

We each get our own place. And each pay. Two beach condos next to each other. Under one roof, we tried that but they controlled too much of our vacation.

They always pay for everything. We joke and call it the sherpa fee because I'm always lugging their bags everywhere
