we moved from a SFH to a condo about half the size to be closer to family (we’re elderly). I miss the privacy of a single home and ability to just open a door to be outside, no going down a long hall, elevator, another hall, etc.

Most of all, I miss my kitchen. It was slightly larger, but designed so well. It was the most practical kitchen layout I’ve ever had. Other thing I miss a lot is the screened porch.

And….that’s about it, honestly. The new house is better in every way. Having a SFH is a big difference. The kids can run around and play without worrying about the neighbors hearing us, and we can play movies as loud as we want. Also, we actually hang out with our new neighbors very often. I can’t say that about my old neighborhood, most of the neighbors in the old neighborhood were South Asian, and never spoke to my American DH and I. That got old, especially when we tried to get our kids to play together and they would always deny us. We don’t have that problem in our new neighborhood at all.

That isn't a crime. Also, the wife may have been looking up at you through her skylight when she was showering and you were changing in your closet. 👀

We’re worried about this too. Right now we’re in a very small SFH adjacent to the Ballston - Rosslyn corridor (non 22207) and we’ll need to move relatively soon because it’s so small. We want the better schools of 22207 for when kids are school age but realllllly don’t want to give up our walkability.

The thing I miss the most is the neighbors. We were able to step outside and see real friends (for all of us), have impromptu get togethers, and a genuine community.

I also miss the unfinished basement which we could put immeasurable amounts of ugly stuff. Not a big deal but I liked that. Prefer having a finished one though.

But sigh, the neighbors.

80s colonial. Very pretty to look from the street Miss my sunroom, attached sitting room from the bedroom, double side deck, vaulted family room, the cute laundry chute, wooded backyard

CA spanish style home. I loved it, but not the kitchen. It was tiny.

Now we have a big colonial with a big kitchen but it has zero character, and I hate it.

I wish I could have my current kitchen in my CA home.

We moved from our condo in Clarendon to a SFH in 22207. Our new neighborhood is pretty perfect for raising kids. But man I miss the walkability, proximity to the metro, retail, etc.

Old and new are pretty similar but here is what I miss about the old.

Old house had a larger and flatter back yard.
The new one has a pretty view from the back of the house, but once in the yard, the neighbor’s house is too close and their second story windows look straight into our yard. They used to have trees but chopped them down to put in a pool and now there is less privacy.

Also went from 5 bedrooms to 4. The 5th bedroom was my office. The new house has a large sunroom which I currently use as my office. It sounds great, but it isn’t. I would prefer a smaller more enclosed space as my office.
The sunroom is big and beautiful but wasted space. We already have “living” areas in the front living room, rear family room, and basement rec room, why do we need a whole other living room in the sunroom? It’s impressive but stupid when they could have added more practical things like a proper office, bedroom suite, laundry room, or walk in pantry on the main level. If we stay here long term I’d like to do a major renovation.

The new house has more updated kitchen and bathrooms so that is nice but if I had a choice, I’d prefer the old house.

1800s rowhouse: The high ceilings and super tall cabinets. The giant double size master bedroom. The crown molding and the intestine interior angles and lightwell. Luckily we still own our old house, we just rent it out.
