If she walks into any drugstore, there is a large section, near the tampons usually, of OTC yeast infection treatments. She can use a vaginal suppository daily for 3-7 days (depending on the one she chooses). They're messy and not particularly comfortable. The easiest treatment is a one time oral fluconazole dose which she can get from telehealth, student health center, literally any urgent care.

Does she diagnose all her own illnesses and injuries, or just those that could impact her fertility in the future?

It's not your job as a parent to find home remedies. it's your job to insist that she see a doctor for proper treatment.

OP. My daughter doesn’t want to go the doctor, and she doesn’t want an OTC medication, and she dislikes medication. I’ve heard of multiple home remedies for treating vaginal yeast infections, but I’m not sure which is best. I made that mistake once too, back in college. Monistat Ine was quite terrible, I read online it is not uncommon to have a burning sensation from it particularly the high strength one. I went to student health and got a prescription and got better pretty much immediately.

Seriously, it's a sensitive area, just go see a doctor.

If she wants a home remedy because she's embarrassed to buy something OTC, go buy some Monistat for her. And insist she see a doctor if that doesn't clear it up. Be a parent, OP, not an enabler. Don't help her make dumb choices.

It’s your daughter’s choice to continue to remain miserable with her yeast infection. A simple course of Diflucan will resolve it overnight. Why doesn’t she want to see a doctor?

I’m not sure why people are being so rude about this. I said she doesn’t want to use any medication, and wants something that isn’t medication. She’s willing to buy that, but not medication.

I'm sure you can find some Facebook or Reddit group that describes a hundred home remedies for this condition, and probably will waste a lot of time and money, and might make the condition much worse. (I have heard a plain yogurt douche is popular. I'm not joking.) Is there some reason she won't use medication for this?

There isn't anything. That's why. She can google natural remedies, but the problem is that it may be bad enough that she needs prescription strength treatment. The doctor is the way to resolve this. Modern medicine is not the enemy.


I'm also confused as ro why the daughter would want to take random leftover medication that potentially wouldn't work but would be unwilling to buy medication for that purpose. Just, why? It makes no sense whatsoever.

What is the question? Both you and your daughter seem to have an aversion to having her see a gynecologist, and also to buying over the counter vaginal medication. If she's too embarrassed, she can order it from Walgreens or Amazon and have it shipped to her. Does she know how to insert a suppository?

Alternatively, she might have bacterial vaginosis, which is not an STD and can occur regardless of sexual activity. For that she would need a prescription antibiotic.

Because what you are proposing is stupid and potentially dangerous. Untreated STDs can cause infertility, just FYI.
