A lot of kids may choose affortable schools and UMD as its a great school. That doesn't mean results are dismal.
Many of the kids might not have unlimited resources. I would think they got a full ride at UMd and most likely will go to grad school so why pay for undergrad?
Very few get a full ride to UMD.
Lots of magnet kids do get the presidential scholar merit aid which is $20K for four years. My kid got that from RMIB.
Actually, several students from magnets do get rejected to UMD, but mostly for CS/eng.
RM families are generally pretty comfortable. They only take so many students per school so it's not surprising that not all don't get in.
Comfortable doesn’t mean they have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend per kid on college. Comfortable puts them in the donut hole.

He never heard about a colleague being accepted at MIT and going to UMD (that person might very well exist).
We'd probably choose UMD over MIT because of the cost and wanting to pay for grad school. Not everyone can pay $100K a year.
This kid got a free ride to MIT (Questbridge) and turned it down for UMD
Sure dude stop
Capping
It surprised me too. Not sure if they got the Banneker Key or something else but what UMD was offering plus living at home made more financial sense apparently. Not our role to second guess what someone else decides.
My own Blair magnet kid won’t be applying to any ivies or MIT as there is zero chance we can afford the $100k a year that they cost.
If you can't afford then your kid might very well receive financial aid. Did you try their cost estimators?

2026 is a large class overall. People need to stop assume that the college commitment list are equivalent to acceptance or quality of program. College is very expand competitive now. There is also a trend of kids choosing a more “fun” school after all the pressure and work during HS.
The list doesn’t tell you anything about UMD admits. It tells you who accepted their place there.
Yes my statement about fewer UMD admits was actually based on having a senior at Blair.

I have no idea if that list is accurate but it presumably reflects where students end up not where they were admitted. For example i know if at least one kid who was admitted to MIT and turned it down. (To go to UMD, FWIW)

I was so stressed out during acceptance time because if DC had been admitted to MIT, I wasn't sure we could say no. They got an interview, and the interviewer had gone to the same school as DC. In the end, DC was rejected, but if they had gotten in, we were thinking we'd say yes. But, if we did that, we'd have to be willing to pay that much for DC#2 college. That would've impacted our retirement heavily.
DC went to UMD, and they are very happy there and has an amazing internship this summer. So, it worked out, so far.
