I actually find Brandy Melville to be ok price wise and good quality. I have other issues with them but price/quality isn't it.

Uniqlo was really good for my tiny 13 year old. They run small to begin with and were perfect. That and a small spattering of Aerie worked well.

My 11.5 year old and I hit so many stores after she had a growth sport - she’s starting to show puberty signs, has put on a bit of weight, and is now 5 feet after years of being very very small next to her classmates (she’s a rising 7th grader).

She can’t fit Zara kids anymore which I think bothered her, but found some good pjs at Gap Kids. (Her aunts sent her a package from Zara kids this past spring, and every item was too small, and for the first time in her life that I know of, she seemed upset at her body). We went into American Eagle for the first time for each of us, and got help getting non-cheeky shorts, and I got her a Henley tee that is very fitted (xs) - more on that later. One pair of the Offside shorts were so tight on her - I realized we didn’t understand the sizing. Anyway.

Our area has Edikted, Pac Sun, Brandy Melville and Princess Polly, and we were each completely overwhelmed. The styles looked both tiny but mature, and Brandy Melville was stuffed with people. We could have bought one tee, but the line was a city block long, and the dressing rooms were closed. We didn’t find anything in these stores, and while none of it is me, I was open to it. So some tweens may not be ready for these highly targeted stores.

The American Eagle Henley that she seemed so comfortable in at the store is a flop because wearing it in real life, the top buttons pop and a fragment of her camisole bralette is shown, and she reflexively pulls on it. I talked to her about how I really want to help her get what she likes within reason (budget), but that my whole goal is to never have her feel extremely self-conscious in the clothes she’s in, to have the thought about her shirt opening or her butt out run at the same time she’s trying to have fun. I think she understood that. Anyway — we have lived on hand me downs and little kid clothes for her whole life, so this was wild.

Try Nike if she's athletic.

My daughter loves Hollister. If you hate shopping I would avoid the Hollister at Tyson's Corner (it's a zoo any time we've gone), but they do have one at Montgomery Mall. We have starting ordering from https://www.depop.com/ - "preloved" trendy brands, we've gotten lots of Lululemon clothes from there at a much cheaper price than a new one.

I also got my daughter a Dandy sweatshirt https://dandyworldwide.com/ - they are pricey but well-made and she has worn it a lot.

Please don't buy Brandy Melville.

Small sizes ONLY. That's the issue. And the owners support terrible causes. Do your homework. Why do you think they only offer small sizes??

My daughter is similar, she's average height but slim. She fits into XS at Aerie and M at Hollister (the sizing is SO off at Hollister). I don't like buying things that are so insanely expensive, so we buy solely off the sale racks at those stores. She has also liked Uniqlo and the Target All In Motion brand. It's such a struggle to find her clothes, she is in between kids and adult sizes right now, so I appreciate everyone else's suggestions, too!
