I've met a couple kids named Summer in the last few years, and also know an adult Summer. None of them, nor their parents, are trashy. It actually reads as like a "rich hippie" name to me. Similar to names like Indigo, Autumn, or Sunday. I could see Winter slotting in with those.

BUT the huge caveat here is that if your family is not a "rich hippie" family, it could come off all wrong. So you have to be self aware here, which is hard, because you have to think about how other people will see your family in the future when your kid is a person in the world. Tricky.

This is why a lot of people just default to more popular, standard names. They aren't as risky. But they can be a bit more boring and feel less specific to you or your kid. That's the trick of naming a baby.

I was going to say that names like that (Summer, Autumn, Dawn) were popular in the 70s and 80s among hippie professor types. I have one of those names and my parents both have PhDs and lived in Northern CA.

I like it as a unisex name, DH likes it only as a girl name.

My neighbor named her dog Winter because he is snow white.

It is not an uplifting name. It sounds moody and I doubt any kid with that name would like it.

For a boy this name is...terrible.

I don’t like it, mostly because I hate winter as a season. But I don’t think it’s necessarily trashy.

"Winter" is not trashy. It's a little 1990-something pop star parent. It's a tiny bit trying-to-be-different, even though it is a relatively common name now. But it's fine.

It was also the name of the primary lead in a historical novel that was an almost bestseller in the 1950s.

Source, the novel was on the shelf of abandoned books at my grandparents' stuck in time summer place. Right next to copy of timeline announcing Neville Chamberlain had assured peace in our time.

I don't think Winter is trashing like Crystal, in part because they represent two very different things. Cold, bleak vs flashy.

If I was really stuck on an odd name, then I would name her something like Jane Winter Baleau, then let her go by whatever she wants.
