You took it all through high school and didn't learn verb tenses until college? Must have been a bad HS program. I took it all through HS and started with a 300 level literature course in college.

I am intermediate Spanish but learning French because of wanting to explore French Canada and I love France.

Over 65 and in my area, I can audit French classes at a local state university as long as there is room in the class.

Also recommending getting Le Monde and LaPresse (Canadian) online. Even just reading headlines is helpful. Finally, tons of free lessons on YouTube.

Question: at my age, am I a complete dreamer to think I can gain any proficiency in French?

I am on a 274 day streak of Duolingo for French. I do not pay for it but they will at various times offer you 3 days -1 month free. During that time I do 3-4 lessons a day. Then I cancel right before I am charged. The ads are usually just for Duolingo itself so not too annoying.

I took French as an adult at the USAD when I moved to DC just because I wanted to learn it. I took Spanish in HS and College. It is amazing how much does come back. Some is useful, some is not.

LOL Mine is different but I do remember the short Spanish and French conversations I learned in an intro language class in high school. I don't remember what some of the words mean but I can still repeat them.
