OP, my dad also remarried and he was the only one who couldn't see his wife's resentment and spite toward me. He chose HER every time, and the result is that my relationship with him crumbled. I'm 45 now and haven't seen my dad in over 20 years. After being hurt over and over again as he rejected me and chose her when I was young like your daughter, I had to protect myself and break away.

Choose your wife now, and you may lose your daughter forever.

I don’t get why this would be fake. I care for both my wife and daughter, and I’m not sure how to handle this with my wife. She needs to give a reason, but won’t.

You're a dad first. Man up. Your wife is out of line. I feel so sorry for your daughter that she doesn't have a dad.

Your daughter comes first. Grow a spine and tell your wife to suck it up. This is why people should never remarry.

I think this is divorce worthy. You should never have married someone who doesn't want your 18 year old daughter to live with you.

I am assuming your wife is your daughter’s Stepmother?

I would allow my daughter to stay before college.

What is your wife’s reasoning for not wanting this??

+1. And some people wonder why their kids don’t speak to them as adults.

I understand why it might not be your wife’s preference to have your daughter there full-time, but you will never get this chance again and you will permanently damage your relationship with your daughter if you say no. If your wife can’t suck it up for one summer, you might really want to question that relationship. I say this is a divorced mom in a relationship and a child of divorce. The kid should come first.

How is this even a question?

If this is a step- mom saying this ( and gives no reason) CHOOSE YOUR CHILD!

A stepmother who objects to her stepdaughter living with her the summer before college and didn't offer a reason is not who you want living with you.

This. Kids first.

Your new wife is unfortunately showing her colors a little later than would have been ideal.

But now you know what kind of person you married.

Sadly, for a lot of men, the kids do not come first.
