Trip was great for the most part, but I got super sick in Acapulco. High fever, horrible GI issues, the worst. Didn't help that I got super sunburned as well. So, I was holed up in our room sick while all my classmates were out having fun and having fun around me balled up on the bed. On top of that, there was a club nearby and the music and PA system was just blasting into our room pretty much all night long.

I was so bad that my Spanish teacher got the hotel doctor to look at me and I got some sort of mystery shot. I was barely well enough to get on the plane back and pretty much shook the entire time from the fever chills.

Parents ended up submitting the doctor's bill to our insurance and they surprisingly paid. Rumors were rampant at my HS that I nearly died in Mexico since I didn't go back to school when we first returned. LOL. Fun memories from over 35 years ago!

OMG love the mystery shot and the rumors about near death in Mexico. How goth/mysterious.

I got food poisoning so bad in Taiwan that I didn’t know how I was going to get on the plane home. Thank goodness it eased right before I left for the airport.

My hotel was bombed in Mumbai.

We went to one of the most “biologically intense” places on earth and saw a squirrel. Food was good though.

Honeymoon in Bahamas: ugliest rental car, ugliest and messy airport, unsafe hotel neighborhood, husband falling asleep early and snoring as hell.

We stayed at an "eco lodge" in the rainforest in Puerto Rico. We were the only guests. The sheets had a blood stain when we arrived. Hosts were not on premises once we discovered it. There was nothing close by. We left early the next morning.

On a plane I sat next to a tour leader for a well known worldwide tour company. He was talkative and had many stories. An older gentleman died a quick death. His widow took a short hiatus from the tour, rejoining the group later carrying an urn with his ashes.

We have no snorkel gear but didn’t think they’d spring for replacing that.
We go back to the airport to return home 7 days later and there’s our suitcase. Spirit never thought to bring it to us.

My family went on an entire Caribbean cruise without our luggage. About 100 passengers never got their luggage which Air Jamaica was supposed to transport from Miami to Jamaica (departure and arrival port).

There were honeymooners on our cruise.

There was only one model of ladies' swimsuit for sale. A bikini that only Heather Locklear could love. My sub-size 0 sister bought one of the 4 in stock. I went snorkeling in Aruba in a bra, T-shirt, and men's trunks.

Our luggage toured the Caribbean, collecting "Narcotics Free" customs stickers but never reaching the ship. We got it back in Miami.

The cruise line went bankrupt a few years later.

I enjoyed the ports but spent a lot of time wearing the pair of thin corduroy pants I wore to keep the plane's AC chill off my legs.

This Christmas season we decided to drive to Hershey PA to visit the decorated Hersheypark, drink hot chocolate and perhaps go on a few rides, weather permitting. The Hotel Hershey was booked so we got a room at an upscale chain nearby instead. Well, it was too cold to enjoy literally anything about the trip and there's really not much else going on in Hershey (or nearby Harrisburg) PA in the dead of winter. What's more, the Central PA versions of even fairly upscale hotel chains are not the jewels in the crown.

Lesson learned: if you want to travel by car during the winter, DRIVE SOUTH ONLY, and preferably for 8+ hours.

Oh man, if you'd asked me in advance, I could have hooked you up with some Harrisburg/Hershey things to do!

The pokemon go story has me cracking up. "Fighting in gyms" is literally tapping on your phone for like a minute, it's not some big event!

Bahamas cruise with my in-laws and two kids under 4yo. They were too little to spend much time at the kid daycare and so it was a nightmare of keeping them busy on the boring ship in a small windowless cabin and chasing them around. In-laws were 0% helpful and never offered to watch them for a second. We went to the beach excursion and I remember crying on the little shuttle from exhaustion. Just horrible and I never wanted to cruise again.

ugh.

What were his whines and complaints? I only ask because my mom *thinks* this is a bucket list trip, and I fear I would be in your shoes if I actually do it with her!!!

OP here. His complaints were about all the walking. He's a bit overweight, not in shape and was told about all the walking (20,000 steps a day) but i don't think it registered. He brought the wrong shoes - he wore brand new sketchers (because some youtuber said they were the best shoes for Japan) and he wore cowboy boots (wtf) because he thought it would be cool to show the Japanese locals that he was from Texas . He got blisters day 1 of the trip and was whining and complaining. By day 2, he wanted to hire a private driver to shuttle us around Japan and we said no - but he could do it for the two of them if he wanted to. Every train station we went in was met with whining because OMG stairs! He's in his early 50s and was acting like a child.

He was asked multiple times for his input on the itinerary but didn't say one word about what he wanted to do. He did watch youtube videos and tik toks about traveling Japan so he was aware of the walking involved and what this entailed.

And he wanted to wander off to play Pokemon Go to hit up 'poke stops' and 'fight' other players in gyms, so he was complaining that we didn't care about this game or chasing down pokemons. Told him multiple times that he could go off and do his own thing but absolutely refused. Also told him that he could rest and didn't have to do everything we did but again, refused. He insisted on coming with my sister and I when we wanted to go shopping - something he was not interested in, but he refused and insisted on coming with. He didn't even go into the stores with us; he just stood outside the entrance and waited - so weird. But complained that he was tired of standing, that his feet hurt, blah blah blah, but wouldn't take any suggestions.

never traveling with him again!!

IDK what age your mom is but I wouldn't bring a senior to Japan. It's just too hard.

Oh man, that's awful! But the detail about wearing the cowboy boots to show he's from Texas is sooo funny!

Being stranded at some location anywhere is a nightmare of mine and absolutely a driving reason we buy trip insurance for any international destination. And please let me continue to fantasize that if I’m stuck in an African jungle or atop Machu Picchu amid political unrest or a Volcano that’s getting too steamy, that I’ll be able to pull out my phone, call my trip insurance 800 #, and I’ll soon be hearing the helicopter coming for my evacuation.

I’m the CAR poster. I typed the whole story out and then lost it just as I was going to post it. I can assure you no one was going to rescue us, which is why I’m so thankful we survived. There was absolutely no way to contact the outside world. But we were in one of the most remote places in the world. If you go on safari in Kenya you’re gonna be just fine!

Long story short: an overland trip from Cameroon through CAR, inexperienced and dishonest guide, vehicle trouble, lots of sketchy checkpoints where our passports were confiscated by drunk soldiers, and a pit of mud the size of a football field we had to cross (where the stranding happened). It was a very scary situation. We did see the gorillas and forest elephants at Dzanga Sangha National park, for which, almost 15 years later, was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

I paid almost $10,000 for five nights in an Airbnb on Miami Beach. I invited friends and relatives at my expense. My relatives were unable to travel due to a southwest shutdown flight issue. My friends ended up wanting to stay at a hotel and pawned off their sullen child to stay with us at the Airbnb. The Airbnb was extremely noisy with a family next-door and a constantly crying baby. This was over Christmas and instead of being lovely weather it was freezing cold and raining the whole time.
