Agree with India. Some places in the far west were not as bad as the others.

Nearly as bad as India was Cairo. Filth everywhere except for the two luxury neighborhoods.

Rome gets an honorable mention for dirtiest western city.

Maputo, Mozambique and/or another vote for Delhi. Both are at a level of filth, noise and disfunction that can't be matched by anywhere I've seen in the other cities that have been mentioned in prior posts - and I think I've visited them all.

I'm sure that Amsterdam wasn't the dirtiest, but I agree that it was shocking how bad it was. Especially if you leave the city and visit smaller towns, which are pristine. Graffiti, smelly canals, those weird trash things that are supposed to be places to put trash underground, but people just leave random things sitting there, weed smell, etc.


Another vote for Amsterdam.
