So you have 500k saved for retirement. Are you saying that's normie or not?

It is just so odd to me that you would provide yours and hers and both together. Are you planning on just spending yours and she is only allowed to spend hers?

For a single 39 yr old with no kids, you would be in a great position. You just keep working, keep investing, let it grow. No notes. You will be surprised by how it really starts to accelerate in your 40s and 50s, you just have to keep up what you are doing.

If you are married and that's for both of you, I'd try to accelerate your savings/investing rate. It's fine at that level, especially if you've purchased real estate instead of investing more, but now is the time to amp up what you are investing, especially as you start to approach peak earnings.

If you're married and that's just you, see the comments for a single person, plus sit down with your spouse to look at the big picture. If you both have about that, you are already well past the half million mark and doing well.

If you have kids, everything is different and depends on how many kids, college expectations/plans, spouse, whether you and spouse both work full time, home equity, etc. I still wouldn't say that is a bad amount for a couple with kids at 39, but it's not necessarily great either (depends on what else is happening) and I just have lots of other questions.

OP here.

Not married no kids. Would love both! Trying to meet financially responsible men after my divorce.

Rent a small one bedroom apartment.

Make sure you get a good prenup!!!

It’s that easy. And yes you’re behind

They’re not very behind if that’s 365k invested. By 65, that’s over $2M in current dollars at 7% returns without any more contributions. This is well above the median of retirees.

7% real returns over the next two decades starting from today is very unrealistic. We're at a peak right now.

This is very realistic.
We have always been at a peak.

Yep, USA could be Japan 2.0. We just need to double our CAPE ratio.

Same here. OP, as a result of some bad luck and some bad decisions, our net worth was lower than yours in our 40s. I'm now 58 and have $1.9M in retirement savings and $1.5M in real estate equity. We made better decisions, had better luck (with the great stock market), maxed out savings everywhere, and since I returned to work, we were saving twice as much. Don't get discouraged. You're on track so long as you keep working and saving.

I understand that people on this board want to live a lavish lifestyle and need 20M to retire. But that’s not the reality for most people.

My aunt retired at the beginning of this year with 2M. She is 65 and her husband is 67.
A 4% withdrawal rate would give them 80k. SS will bring another 70k. Their house in fairfax is paid off.
She feels like 150k is plenty for their lifestyle.

At the end of 2011 my TSP (federal 401K equivalent) balance was $347,000. It is currently 2.35M, 14 1/2 years later. I have been make steady high contributions and investing in target date funds. At some point it starts making more money annually than you contribute, significantly more. This is the power of compounding. About 5 years ago we reduced contributions to focus on increasing college savings. DH is similarly situated.

You are doing great.

You just keep chugging away...max retirement, control spending, if home ownership is a possibility, pursue that. You're throwing money away on rent. Once you've done these things, open a brokerage and start adding money to an index fund. It will add up- 20-25 years, you'll be fine. The main thing is to control spending- you can't do any of the above if you don't have a strict budget.

+1
Just spoke with a fairly highly regarded financial planner the other day and he is using 2% real for future returns. I have a global stock portfolio and use 4% real.

Dave Ramsey says 12% returns. So suck on that.
*drops mic*

Dave Ramsey also tells people to pay off low interest mortgages. So…

Yah, just fckin around. I know he's a tool.
