Thank you, I still have the question; what do they do if there are not enough students taking theses spots as UMD doesn't have a waitlist. Do they look into denied applicants who had good applications but there was no space for them?

UMD predicts yield—the percentage of admitted students who enroll—by analyzing historical enrollment data, tracking "demonstrated interest" (campus visits, email engagement, early applications), and using predictive modeling to estimate student commitment.

They do a pretty good analysis of the number of students they believe will enroll, even with summer melt (students who hear from their waitlisted options) UMD hasn't in the recent past ever gone back to denied applicants. You can request a re-read of a denied admission decision through a formal appeal process, but they rarely change the initial outcome. Appeals require new and significant academic information.

Unfortunately on this forum there is a constant them of trying to put down UMD. I could see how many thought this with the way the original questions was worded. UMD hate is strange because admissions is more and more difficult as you unfortunately found out. I'd encourage your child to look into transferring after a year.

It's got nothing to do with hating UMD. It's that OP didn't express herself correctly, and frankly, is not being reasonable.

UMD admission is major blind. There are often complaints about kids will high GPAs that are not admitted.

As you can see above, its extremely uncommon for UMD to put kids on the waitlist

My NOVA kid is a junior at UMD and loves it. Been able to get internships each summer. Great friends and grades. Go Terps!

This is true of most public universities as the yield rate is so much lower.

North Carolina schools are required to take a larger percentage from in state. I think it was something like 80%.

Hey op - if going to Montgomery college is something your dc wants to do, they can do a year or two at MC and be guaranteed to transfer provided they apply to the program (mtap) and have a 3.0 college cumulative gpa. There are folks to help with this!
