I am glad my son was not in the pilot program. He is brilliant and fast learner but he is not mature and hard working to take a high school credit course like algebra 1 honors in grade 6

He does not care about the grades and most of the times does not prepare anything before any test. With this attitude, he was not ready for a course that impacts his GPA. It would have cause so much stress on me to make his study and to make sure all his assignments were completed on time.

He is now automatically enrolled in grade 7 and will be more mature and sensible to take it seriously.

Only the current AAP 6th graders who are not in the pilot got the email. The email says child is automatically enrolled in Alg 1 in grade 7, and you can opt out by going to digital consent.

Did you get an email notification? I did not for my 5th grader. But I do see the opt in form due May 15 in the parent digital consent system. That deadline is too soon without any information being given to parents.

I did not get an Email for my 5th grader. The opt in/out is due by 5/8 for us. I only heard about it bc of this thread

Take geometry in summer after taking algebra 1 in grade 7?

Is so much math acceleration helpful for college application? What majors needs so much advanced math?

There are kids in aap who don't pass advance any of their sols and there are kids in general ed who get perfect scores...

We also do mathnasium and they seemed quite surprised when I mentioned the 6th grade pilot earlier this year. They don't recommend it for most kids.

Principals also think this is a terrible idea. People should be contacting school board members that this is occurring. I am all for giving kids an option to test into Algebra 1. But it should be parameters to make sure the kids being placed are truly ready.

This is insane. The AAP curriculum is 1 year ahead. A student being instructed by FCPS in math in an AAP class who hasn't been taught the whole curriculum by Kumon or Chinese Saturday school is not ready for Algebra 1 in 6th grade. In 6th grade, they learn 7th grade math. Some are then ready for Algebra 1 in 7th, some are not.

This. It’s not just algebra, but an high school honors class. And then FCPS honors geometry is brutal. At least it is at our HS. I wouldn’t want my 7th grader having to deal with that. I’m not even sure about 8th.
