Duke, Vandy, UVA, UNC and Mich are tough for everyone with very low admit rates. There is no way to predict on stats alone. They are reaches for everyone and the deeper app info will matter. Did you take highest rigor in all five subjects all four years, did you win awards, did you do research, did you make an impact, are your essays and recs well written, do your activities align with your major, does your app tell a story. The answer is in the nuance. There are way too many kids with great stats all applying To the same schools.

The others are good targets. Add a likely or two as well. Good luck.

Can your kid be proactive in developing a leadership position out of the volunteering work?

He should not be wasting time retaking the SAT when his ECs are this underdeveloped. None of these schools will magically say yes if he applies with a 1550 instead of a 1520. He is aiming extremely high - it’s not too late to work on ECs but most summer program and internship application deadlines have passed a while ago and research positions are filled. I would ED UVA.

This kind of kid needs unbelievable essays. Like blow your mind away essays. I would invest in some help on that front.

My guess - In at all except impossible to predict at Duke, Vanderbilt, UVA and UNC. He has a better chance at UVA & UNC over Duke/vanderbilt. He’s certainly qualified but these things are random.

This kind of kid may do better with slacs.

Not enough distinctive ECs for top privates and maybe Michigan. If he is top 10% of the class and interested, he can try for UCs.

My kid whose profile was sort of similar got into UGA and William and Mary and merit at lower ranked schools. Similar as in boy, same SAT score, slightly lower GPA at a private school. Your kid sounds like mine- falls in that “standard strong” category. He’ll be fine and will have good choices as long his choices are spread out over a range of more selective and less selective schools.
