Definitely an urban kid. GU is very, very close to home though. Outgoing, athletic, into music. Definitely not interested in a Frat—at all.

UVA may not be the best fit then. Charlottesville is lovely but definitely not urban, and Greek life dominates the social scene the first couple of years. Of course, you can find your people outside of the Greek system and the majority of the student body is not Greek, but anyone who says that it does not impact the overall culture is kidding themselves. I feel like Greek life plays less of a central role at Georgetown and Johns Hopkins.

Thanks. That’s my concern. He has several close friends, and many former classmates choosing UVA so I think that can cloud how it fits him personally. I’m trying to instill not choosing based on who you know—which I think he gets—and more on how they fit him personally and what will give him what he needs.

Hopefully, visiting all 3 in a short span of time will be a great comparison. I found with my oldest visiting again as an accepted student a year after original visit made a difference and he very quickly bonded with one of the choices.

Thanks to everyone for helpful comments!

I'm the poster who lives near Hopkins. If you come visit and have a little extra time, drive to Sherwood Gardens (about a mile north of Homewood Campus). The tulips are in full bloom: https://www.sherwoodgardens.org/

Also, check out R House (a few blocks south of campus), which is an upscale food hall: https://r.housebaltimore.com/

Thanks!

I vote JHU. Congrats on the acceptances and three great options!

+1

Public vs Private is real. There is a huge difference.

I’m a fan of Georgetown but its campus is a dump compared to UVA’s.

Its endowment is small. Meanwhile, a third of UVA students are out of state and paying near Georgetown/Hopkins prices, while getting an annual appropriation from the state that is equivalent to a distribution from a $6-10 billion endowment.

Don’t fall for this trap of simple thinking on public vs private unless you want to make poor decisions.

It’s seen in the class sizes and the advising. Differences have a lot to do with sheer size.

This is so uninformed. I live 3 blocks from the Homewood campus. It's lovely. Come see for yourself.

Agree. People confuse it with med. center. Homewood is gorgeous and next to some really nice homes/neighborhood.
