OP, I was a chronic nail biter my entire life and advanced to picking my cuticles. My hands were a disgusting embarrassing mess and seeing them added to my stress and anxiety. My therapist at the time suggested I try hypnotherapy and it worked. After 10ish sessions I literally lost the desire to bite or pick and outside of a couple minimal setbacks where I reverted back for a week or two, it’s stood the test of time for years. During the few times the desire popped back up, dip powder manicures kept my hands out of my mouth. These days I just keep my nails super short just above the cuticle and no polish. It’s a simple, clean look that suits me at this stage of life. Good luck!

OP here: First, lighten up. Second, for this highly specific, nail-focused thread, I am trying to communicate that while I need fake nails, I don't want them to LOOK like fake nails. Some people (even white women, gasp!) like the look of a longer, flashy, eye-catching nail. I need a fake nail that looks like a real, low-key, simple nail.

I hear PP on the KISS nails, and I frequently use the short, petite version, but shock of all shocks, I pick at those too. I am assuming here that acrylics are unpickable and largely unbitable. Like steel tips on my nubs.


Gel wraps. I keep mine very short but gel wraps mean I can't bite them.

This is a joke to a serious nail biter.

Here's what I would do and basically did. Go and get some short tips with the dip powder over them. Let them grow out 2 to 3 weeks. By then you can either cut the tip entirely or cut down. Get the dip again. Your nails will grow under the dip. After a few months of this you will either have kicked the habit or you are now someone who just does the dip every few weeks. A little annoying but your hands will always look nice.

OP I am you and I have the easiest solution:

Press on nails for a week and then your nails simply grow underneath. I tend not to bite grown, firm 2mm nails - so after 10 days of press ons I have a nail polish like a normal person. Until I bite them again; rinse, repeat.
I like Kiss press ons.
