I always shove my crossbody into the Lo & Sons when boarding and then pull it out on board and wear it.

I fly dozens of times a year on big and small planes, and I’ve never had an issue with my Lo & Sons OG.

This is the Lo & Sons OG I’ve been using as my personal item for a decade. It easily fits under the seat.

It can attach to my roller bag handle, is lightweight, and it has lots of pockets for organization.

Since so many women carry this bag for laptops, etc. I suspect airline staff recognize it and know it fits under the seat even though it’s really big. The soft-sided bag makes it easy to fit anywhere.

Anyway my personal item of choice is my Topo Light Pack: https://topodesigns.com/products/light-pack

Very simple and sleek design, great to use on outings on a city trip because it has a nice design (reads urban commuter not hiker). Not huge but I prefer the compact size for navigating planes, and much easier to travel with than a tote bag.

Flight attendants do check to make sure that the personal items are stowed beneath the seats prior to takeoff. I have seen them ask passengers to put things completely underneath the seat in front of them. I assume that if the passenger was unable to comply due to the size of the item, the flight attendants would intervene in some way.

If your luggage looks pulled together and not chaotic, I don’t think they pay much attention. But if it looks messy, it does seem like they are the ones they ask to check the bag or be more particular about the sizing.

I’m the PP- this bag also is a lot larger than personal item size limits. I feel like it’s risky to push it too much beyond limits, good chance that some not insignificant number of times you will need to check it. Why not just get a bag that fits size requirements.

Agree. I've seen more and more people stopped at boarding because their personal item is too big.

I find a backpack (not those huge ones) the best because of this. They only see the straps until it’s too late. I’m not abusing the system but I see lots of people with shoulder bags asked to check because it visually looks like more even if it’s not.

I've extensively researched this OP..

The issue for me is I want a light weight bag.

The Free People bag - https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/fp-movement-womens-cloud-9-tote-25pxcucld9ttxxxxxbag/25pxcucld9ttxxxxxbag?srsltid=AfmBOooAr0X_UrWq7VkJjT2dZbH5eGDtmEkat_dC4-4NVzjhTNpWKOWg

This one is good cause it's light. Big but can be stuffed under seat and it's easy to carry.

The Calpak Luka Bag would be my second choice.

Danger Dover and Caraa may have choices you'd like - caraa is light. MZ Wallace bags are pricey but lightweight.

The prob with all those bags with shoe compartments is it's structured and often not lightweight. Every so often Target has oversized bags that will be large and light weight.

If you'd like a backpack, look at Caraa and cinch bag options like Bellroy or Adidas. These are going to be lightweight.

People love Beis bags so maybe those work for ya too!

That doesn't make sense. How on earth do flight attendants know it "fits so much, has so many pockets, is so lightweight, and slips into the suitcase"

This feels like a weird ad to me, too. I’m an FA. We don’t care about your bags because the bags we use utilize the utmost space available.

Right! It's like a poorly written advertisement.

I recently got the Away Everywhere bag. It sits upright under the seat, so it takes up a lot less of my legroom. It slides onto the rolling luggage making it easy to move around the airport. I’ve only used it for one trip so far, but it seams like the ideal travel personal item. The only downside I see is that for family travel, a backpack can come in handy at the destination for daily outings.

+1 have never seen a flight attendant comment on anyone’s anything.

Timbuk2-I don’t remember the style name but it’s a convertible tote/backpack and I love it.
