You were insane. Prior to yesterday, the cartels did not mess with you if you did not mess with them. It was perfectly safe for the average tourist. However, things have changed now. Tourists might become collateral targets.

Next time, use an agent to book - they have more negotiating power because they send the resorts volume.

We're also supposed to go to the cancun area this weekend and are trying to change plans. I normally have no qualms about Mexico and have been many times (and I think many PPs are crazy for being so paranoid) but this feels different.

I wouldn't either. Not right now. Mayakoba all the way on the other side of the country from the problem area, but this kind of unrest could move/pop up elsewhere. It probably won't. But I wouldn't go anyway. And OP is having anxiety over it, so even if it were perfectly safe, she'd probably just be nervous the whole time.

I wouldn't expect a refund, though.

This is why you must buy trip insurance whenever you go outside the US. This is also in case your GOD forbid et injured and need to get a medical flight out.

I had the same thought, so I looked it up. It looks like Fairmont Mayokoba's best refund cancellation policy available still requires a week's notice? I think that's what I am seeing? And OP said they were supposed to go this week. So I wouldn't assume they paid the cheaper nonrefundable rate.

I had a pretty good travel card (Chase sapphire) and I don’t think they would cover this. It doesn’t meet the criteria.
