she should be seen - agree this could be a cyst or HS. she could try using antibacterial soap when she showers - a benzoyl peroxide or hibiclens.

The Bartholin's gland is one of two small glands on each side of the labia minora, just outside of the opening to the vagina.

Well, they're at the opening of the vagina. When I had a Bartholin's cyst, I would have described it as being right next to the vaginal opening.

This is on edge of vulva and leg but underneath not on bikini line. One was closer to buttock.

A biopsy to check
For what?

My guess would be to check for staph? This is OP. I may send her to urgent care tomorrow she said it’s big…she’s at college so has no doctor there

Colleges have doctors.

I know but it’s large and painful and to get in as a new patient could be weeks? Also seems more like a skin issue vs women’s issue?

It’s an infected cyst. It’s not complicated. Urgent care, family med doctor, or the student health clinic could remove it and culture the fluid. This is very routine.

It's weird that they happen regularly on both sides though, isn't it?

Right- that’s my concern. They drain very quickly. (This is OP)

Anonymous wrote:I have had a similar abscess in the same spot, but only on one side. It was a cyst that would reappear due to friction from my underwear. My gyn eventually removed the capsule of the cyst and once it healed, I had no more issues in that spot. A gyn should be able to advise.

I also had this happen. A quick 15 min procedure in the office fixed it. After that, none for five years.

It was underwear definitely and I think partially shaving, but it happened even when I didn’t shave. It only stopped when the capsule was removed.

Yes told her will
Follow up. It’s def more than red shaving bumps and she’s been shaving for years, but clearly something is activated there!

Does she wear tight clothing like leggings? Most likely she has a lot of moisture which creates them.

Because those gland cysts are inside the vagina and this isn’t.

Why would this be more common than the incredibly common Bartholin gland cyst?

Why would a biopsy be more helpful in ruling out a particular bacteria than a swab?

Agree that it may be a Bartholin’s cyst. Go to GYN

It could be Hidradenitis suppurativa. Find a good dermatologist that is familiar with it, not everyone is.

This needs more attention than it is getting.

It could be irritation from ingrown hair combined with a resistant bacterial infection. She should see a doctor. In the meantime no shaving/waxing and wear undergarments that don’t touch on that spot.
