The tampon thing I only learned on this site maybe 10 years ago. No one told us that in the 80s!
I learned the tampon thing on this site too. I had no idea that the used part went in the trash can and not down the toilet. It was such a mess trying not to flush and get it to the trash that I switched entirely to cups.

I grew up with a septic tank and my parents were drill sergeants as to what could and could not be flushed.
Since then, I've had roommates who flush all manner of things, including Q tips.
Flushable wipes should be outlawed. Bidets should be more common.
If more people were bearing the brunt of their actions (ie, costly plumbing bills) the problems would resolve quickly.

About 20 years ago I toured a wastewater treatment plant in the midsized city where I lived at the time. At one part of the process there was a place where trash was separated from what was then otherwise all liquid waste. There was a chute and the trash heaped up under it. I kid you not, it was 6 foot heap of rainbow colored plastic tampon applicators. The guide said that was the #1 trash item at the treatment facility and I don’t remember the volume but it was a LOT. I was floored to learn that anyone flushes those, but apparently many people do!
