The AGs you are talking about come into play. One major reason is the different high school season for MD/VA.

The DMV MLS Next and ECNL P2P clubs combined can play each other every weekend without needing to go anywhere outside the area for competition

Then add the occasional tournament to play outside teams

Someone once compared an area’s soccer to fecal deposits. Some places are constipated, other places have diarrhea. In the end though what is important is what comes out not what goes in. You have to be careful out there if you see what I’m saying.

Be careful what you wish for. I'm from the midwest. For a long time in our metro area, until the past few years really, we had 2 clubs that siphoned off all the talent in order to compete nationally. While both are great if you can get in in terms of increasing your chances to go to a D1 school, one has a reputation for being very political and super toxic and the other is part of a very large franchise system that can make it difficult to break into if you're not already part of it. Also, these teams would have families drive 1-2 hours one way to be on the team and these would car pool.

This local monopoly meant local clubs often would lose all their best players by 8th grade, even when they could otherwise compete at younger age levels. The recent expansion by MLSN/GA and even ECNL to a degree has blown this up enough to where there's actual more opportunity for players to stay with their home clubs and more of these local clubs are getting their kids recruited to college more than ever before.

Now, of course, people also complain about dilution and haivng to travel more (even though yes we probably could now play each other more -- although no one wants to lose to each other). As they say, the grass is always greener.

The reason teams don’t compete nationally is because they lose their good players to DC United and then DC United pisses on them.

There are several teams that are competitive nationally in this area. They just get torn down when mentioned. Just like every club in this area and every coach. There’s no point.

For a team to be good according to DCUM, the team has to win every game they play and that includes preseason friendlies and scrimmages. These games must be born by five goals or more and they cannot concede a goal. These games must be won by five goals or more and they cannot concede a goal. Every player on the roster needs to have been at that club since they were four years old. They must complete 200 passes before scoring a goal. If a team tries to play over a pressing opponent or in behind an opponent, that team plays kickball. Every player on that team must also be committed to a power 4 university on a full scholarship and they must post proof of the full scholarship on social media. Also, the club is not allowed to post anything on social media because that is bragging.

It’s a fair point. But universally, the MLS Next national championship is recognized as a the single most competitive national championship.
