Crazy take!

USC is only 15 miles from the beach. But you have a point about Claremont - that's a difficult drive out of LA (I'm from there and drove that lat month so don't try to tell me it's an easy drive from LAX, it's horrible).

I don't think so, but check. We looked into CS Fullerton for DD who wanted their animation program. Nope, chance of getting in OOS was slim to none. Cal States are for Californians.

Mid-size private: Chapman, Loyola Marymount, U of SantaClara, U of San Diego, U of San Francisco
Large private: USC

U of SC and SF are not in SoCal

Neither is Santa Clara

If you are evangelical Christian.

We are Jewish. DD is at Pepperdine.

I've driven by Pepperdine many times - it's looks awesome. What am I missing about this school vs other Cal beach schools? What did you see in Pepperdine that was different from other schools?

Easy admit!

Oxy had a 15% decline/no shows in last fall’s class which resulted in curtailing faculty hiring and spending, and trying management techniques with admissions such as “lock-in” scholarships to those willing to go with ED1ir ED2 to drive up yield. https://www.oxy.edu/about-oxy/college-leadership/presidents-office/community-messages/falls-incoming-first-year-class

But you need to ask why is it giving merit? Schools do that to get certain students they wouldn’t get otherwise. Oxy’s Selectivity is only 44.9%. Also the new Oxy Commitment Scholarships were announced in October to address the catastrophic 15% reduction in the size of last fall’s class - to which I’ve not yet heard an adequate explanation. I know Jewish students are avoiding it due to violations of their civil rights. The commitment scholarships give $15,000 to students accepting ED1 and ED2 - but that was a fast solution by Admissions to addressing the yield problem. In essence, Oxy is buying yield commitments to ensure students will show up.
