Juneteenth and primary election day on June 23 will be no school. So now the last day will be June 25 or 26. Does anyone know if there is an actual vote today or is it just up for discussion. I guess the pressure to have no school on March 20 possibly won out.
There is a Discussion/Action item this evening: "Technical Amendments to the Adopted 2025–2026 School Year Calendars," but no details are posted yet.
I wouldn’t call this a “technical amendment” unless they were just officially adding in 3/20 & 6/18 like they already announced. To do anything other than that is something much more than a technical amendment and should be communicated and posted !

It's hard to put more than 2 snow days in the calendar based on the number of holidays and 4 post MP teacher only days. They did sacrifice 1 though from the transition day but besides that Maryland law is difficult in building in days unless you want even shorter summers. One thing that Maryland law DOES allow is virtual days after all built in days (minimum 3) are used. They couldn't go virtual on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday but Friday and Monday could have been. That said Prince George's is in the same boat since they had 3 days built in but closed on 7 days so MC isn't alone.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Why are they already asking for a waiver of half the days? For all we know, we will get more snow days this month.
Because they didn’t do a good job planning and put only 1 snow day in the calendar even though we had 4 snow days last year.
Because they didn’t do a good job planning and there’s only 1 snow day scheduled in next year’s calendar.
Because they didn’t do a good job planning and didn’t didn’t submit the virtual learning plan for weather emergencies that Maryland requires, and that other school districts did prepare.
You sense a theme here…

Virtue signal received.
Why did the Councilmembers say nothing when Eid was established as a makeup day on the calendar last year? They could have advocated that the day after President’s day be a makeup day or some other non-instructional day but they were silent then and complaining when MCPS is doing what they planned now.
They should have advocated that MCPS have more than one snow day so it wouldn’t be a surprise which day is being used. Some school districts have four.
For the councilmen to say that they prefer the Eid holiday remains and that they prefer to have a waiver from the state of Maryland so that MCPS shortchanges every kid instructional time shows that these Councilmen haven’t been paying attention to the school calendar and don’t prioritize education.
