My guess is if a lawsuit is filed, MCPS will be forced to get more community input, perform more studies, and present its recommendations again in a few years. Crown will get filled by kids from Gaithersburg to justify building it. Wootton will get a few coats of paint, and the status quo will continue. In a few years, Crown enrollment will stabilize and Taylor will realize he needed Wootton as a permanent school after all. He will then take credit for everything that went well, deny responsibility for putting everyone through this mess in the first place, and retire to widespread applause.

What would the basis of a lawsuit be here? Not being dismissive, just genuinely curious what the argument would be.


Wootton families allege this is a closure, not a move, and that MCPS engaged in arbitrary and capricious behaviors to make it happen. They have a point because MCPS is moving the boundary at the same time to disguise the closure.

Poolesville magnets stay, but only serve their region. When I chatted with the MCPS staff, I was told that the seats for Humanities, SMACs, and Global Ecology would stay the same.


But it will be STEM but SMCS. . different program

Correction, SMACS will be at Gaithersburg, Humanities will be at Watkins Mill along with the IB and Critical Languages, Cultures, and Global Connections.

Under the regional program, it looks like Gaithersburg HS is set up as the tech high school (SMACS, Cybersecurity, Digital Communication: Animation and Game Design), while Watkins Mill will be the Humanities high school

Assuming Wootton moves to Crown:
QO gets Music, Theater / Technical Theater, Medical Science with Biotechnology, and Clinical Healthcare: Medical Assistant.

If Crown opens as a new high school
QO gets Humanities and Critical Languages, Cultures, and Global Connections instead of the medical programs.
