If this is really the complete list, your son should add two respectable but not-too-selective flagships with a late application deadline, like the University of Kansas or Arizona State, as emergency backups.
The trouble with your son’s list is that he’s applying to very selective schools, sounds like a would-be premed and has a low SAT score for most of the schools on the list.
In theory, Wisconsin, Case and Miami should be safeties, but who knows whether they’re really safeties for applicants like your son.
So, your son could easily get into half of the schools on his list, but the Michigan deferral seems like a warning that he could also get shut out.

On the same boat. Deferred ED1, Deferred ED2. Bummed. Have another 10 RD pending. If anything works out in RD, great. But they are all crap shots in RD.
DC is moving on to their EA acceptance schools now.
I am actually not as pessimistic on this one.
ED deferrals basically say the application is admissible but it's not our priority, or there is some weakness one committee member wasn't sure about (often major).
Don't count on any of the deferrals converting to an acceptance. It's still very difficult.
But you are not overshotting.
It's likely the application could pass the committee review in one of the RD schools.
