Yes. Of course, we should prioritise sports over academics. That’s the American way. And your excuse is a red herring since myriad other states start sports later than MCPS and somehow manage just fine. Because they have more sensible HS start times
At my HS we have some sports ending practice at 9:30 PM in order for everyone to get field time. If you want student athletes at practice until 10:30-11 thats on you
Why can't they practice in the morning? Kids who don't do sports would still be able to get a developmentally appropriate amount of sleep.

Why is that the end all be all? I don’t have a problem with sports but ending elementary school at nearly 4pm is horrible. Many of these kids aren’t getting home until close to 5 with bus rides. Then they need to play when they get home but it’s almost dinner time, and many of these kids are still going to bed pretty early. The early years of adding in homework are particularly tough on that schedule.
Not sure what you are arguing with. Where did I ever mention Elementary Schools would end later? My post is about HS and athletics. It never once brought Elementary school schedules into it.
Besides, with after care a lot of those elementary school kids aren’t getting home until close to 6 anyway.

My 3rd grader ends school at 3:35pm. She gets plenty of playtime, sleep, and time to do homework.

We can’t have 2-hour delays indefinitely. It’s ridiculous. Some elementary schools have start regular times of 9:25am. 11:25 is just too late.
As a general comment oh my gosh I really detest the 11:25 start time in ES when there’s a delay. It’s so late. I have a kid who is up at 5am daily. I love the idea of a short day but it’s all the wrong hours.
MCPS school timings are messed up. Elementary kids go to school too late in the day and High School starts way too early
There's always a petition circulating to get them to change high school start time..move it to at least 8am or swap ES start times with HS.
Anonymous wrote:I wish they would announce it earlier because as a teacher it is hard to plan lessons not knowing what the schedule is going to be

I have teens, and yes, that would drive me nuts. MCPS lacks sufficient buses to drive everyone to school at the same time, but when there's a 2 hr delay, they should really start everyone at the same time. High schoolers start their day at 9:45am when there's a 2 hr delay. Which is practically the normal time for elementary, right? All we want is avoid having kids wait in the predawn hours for their buses.
