I am now into year 6.5 of horrible sleep since having our first kid. The issue is that sleep is constantly interrupted when you have kids. Even if you can cobble together 8-10 hours of sleep, it is low quality because of interruptions.

It’s my biggest piece of advice to friends who are considering kids. Your sleep will suck for 7-8 years if you have 2 kids.

Your 6 year old kid is waking you up in middle of night?

The second kid might be younger than 6!

I only had one, but he had night terrors until about 5-6 ish. I did find it helped to leave a snack in the closet for the monster so it could stay in the closet.

A few weeks ago I had a cold or something, first time in years, that wiped me out, followed by a short but exhausting trip with a family member who travels several times of a year to see medical specialists (those trips are always exhausting). Then I had something complicated I was working on and when I'm deep in I will just go on, so pulled two all nighters in a week. That was the week before last week. I still feel vaguely light headed like I still have the cold, and super tired. I read it takes 4 days to recover from 1 hour of lost sleep so if that's what's going on it's be the 4th of July by the time I feel well-rested.

I think I should look into a sleep study sometime though. I sleep fine but it's always hard getting up in the morning. No idea if I snore. I can easily nod off if I allow myself to, usually late afternoon through early evening hours.

Last year I went on a fishing trip that lasted about 15 hours, I went to bed at around 8pm that night and slept until noon the next day, I was utterly euphoric, words came quickly, creativity and humor spilled out of me, it was like lottery winning happiness and I would do anything to have it again.

Sadly, without a 15 hour offshore fishing trip I’m only able to sleep around five hours a night, there are always bags under my eyes and my defining character trait is aggravated impatience.

Good, regular poop is just as wonderful, impactful.
