Is it really that difficult for high school? I thought GDS takes about 60 kids.

The class size grows from about 85-90 to about 120-135, but at least in my kid's class, about 10 8th graders did not continue in HS. So my guess is that they shoot for a net increase of about 40-45, but likely need to admit 60-65 (maybe more) to hit that number. Given the enrollment cap and a similar calculus being run for every expansion year, they probably deliberately undershoot and then go to the waitlist later. Which is an advantage for waitlist kids who otherwise will attending public because they can switch right up until the school year starts if offered a spot.

But some of those slots are already taken by siblings, esp at GDS.

YES. GDS is extremely difficult for HS and so is Maret. 9th grade admissions is when all the K-8 graduates and top public school kids apply.

GDS is very good at recruiting heads of school. No drama, no firings.

GDS beats Maret because it doesn't have all the problems with the athletic fields that make people hate Maret (see the various news articles).

GDS also has a lot more NMSF than Maret, and I always had the sense it was academically much stronger. I think Maret only had one NMSF this year.

NMSF this NMSF that. GDS academics > Maret academics, but NMSF numbers are not some foolproof/unbiased indicator of superior academics.

Ok then what's your evidence that Sidwell is superior to GDS? And that GDS is superior to Maret? You don't want to look at performance data from a national test administered independently to all students. What indicators are you using?

If you want to look at average test scores, do SAT/ACT not PSAT.

Sidwell: 1460/33
GDS: 1430/32
Maret: an abysmal 1380/32

Already we can see the difference. I don't care to do a deep dive into the different course offerings but here is the surface of it all.

Where are those numbers published?

Niche.com

Isn’t niche.com sat score data self reported data from those who use niche.com? If so, that’s not good data because there are a lot of biases built into those data.

Right. This entire line of discussion has been useless and silly.

Exactly but if they’re naive enough to believe self-reported data from a random website then their kid isn’t getting into either

Similar cultures, GDS is bigger so perhaps more opportunities (academic, social, EC)...

I thought that Maret was the copycat.

Maret was first. GDS copied Maret. Burke copied GDS. Field copied Burke.

That's the six degrees of separation of DC's secular private schools.

In what way did GDS copy Maret? Or are you just saying that Maret is older than GDS?
