I'd put the Cornell, MI, and WI essays all in the same category, with different levels of selectivity, but all related.

Did Wisconsin send an email saying the decisions are out, or did your kid just know to check the portal?

Trying to figure out how the notifications work. Should the kids be checking the portals? How often?

These kids weren’t rejected. Wisconsin has effectively just said to these high-stats kids “hey, we think that by now you’re probably into Michigan and/or an SCEA/REA school or something. If not, let us know and we’ll probably accept you in RD.”

Yes, those two are different from the amount of interest an AO can gauge through an applicant's essay. What I just described is what really matters, not if you've visited Madison 10x.

It’s a stupid comment. Obviously they are kids of smart parents who realize xlnt state schools are a great financial value compared to privates at $95k + are going to apply to both.

Did you visit? My high stats kid was accepted, but we visited and he wrote a really good “Why Wisconsin” essay.

We did not do an official visit (had been to campus earlier but not on a tour or anything). I do think that probably makes a difference here. Relatedly, I don't think my DC blew anyone's doors off with their "Why Wisconsin" essay as some others clearly did.

And to the person who suggested this was to "cope" - that's silly. I just was reporting my DC's stats so people can get a sense of the profile of someone who was deferred. No coping necessary. Some things work out, some don't. It also wouldn't be silly to believe that they had a reason to believe my DC might not go - zero connection to the school and high stats, so my DC is likely to have other opportunities. And if I were in the school's position, I might very well do the same thing.

I think that for a college that practices yield protection, one with very high stats (for the school) needs to show some interest. I know a very high stats kid who got deferred by a college in the same league as Wisconsin; the kid was explicitly asked by the college to talk about his level of interest in the loci.
