It’s not one or the other, both are extremes.
OP I know it’s a first world problem but I’ve noticed an uptick on the dishes too. I get it.
The worst for me though is the snow boots/cold weather gear all over the place. Yes it all has a home. But it’s being used frequently so not getting out away. I’m guilty too. We have 2 dogs so I’m out with them 2-3x a day.
