95% map? Or 95% A. 99% is not even enough for map score.
97% math 95% languages arts. Straight As. So are you saying every child that got into a magnet program was in the 99th percentile?

99% cut off for map M is 269. All kids I know got in are above 285 or 290.
Not sure about MAP R as all kids I know with a score of 250+ got rejected.

Maybe high farms school? Our low farms school has really low rate of RM acceptance.

It is a school-blind process so that can’t be it. -DP

Do you apply for criteria based?

This. Kids who got into CES (which is really hard to earn the spot) receives enriched program (usually they also do Compact math, have family support + extracurriculars) goes on to Magnet MS with HIGH and advanced math with tutoring if necessary, and they are the 99%ers who gets accepted into the criteria based High School program.

It’s not fair for the kids who never had the chance to get enrichments between those years.

Nope.

They were already 99%ile before they went to CES, and HIGH and Advanced English is available at non Magnet MS anyway.

And it's not unfair to not be dropped in a HS class that the student isn't prepared for and is unwilling to do the work for, as evidenced by choosing not to do any of the multitude of free enrichment available before high school.

Not true. My kid got into CES with 52nd percentile thanks to school norming. They are now in 5th grade and the only MS with advanced English instruction is the Humanities Magnet. They will use CommonLit while every other MS uses CKLA with all kids in the same class.

Definitely not every child who got into a magnet program was in the 99th percentile-- there are like 800 kids a year who go to regional or countywide magnets-- but did your kid only apply for the very most selective ones?

Bingo you have hit the mcps absurdity shady jackpot

I will give you hope. My DD did not do CES in ES, but did compacted Math. We did not apply for MS CES bc the school was scary but she was able to skip a grade. She applied for Poolesville SMCS and made it. She excelled and graduated in the top 1% with honors and went to the college of her choice. So, your son can try.

My kid never got into magnets but I did provide extra math outside of school.

My kid is at Blair without tutoring or prior magnets.

Your kid has visible talent and willingness to perform effort beyond what their school requires. We're saying that the system isn't fair to the kids who have only invisible talent and aren't willing to work beyond the school's bare minimum, but have parents who want the prestige of a magnet.

Not sure what delusion you’re living in. If your kid is academically qualified, but does not win the lottery at 9 or 12, they do NOT get the enrichment those in magnets do. & if their iq does not correlate to their ability to test exceptionally they won’t even be screened magnets.

If your kid can't even crack the top
10% to get screened, how do you think the magnet will help them?

Everyone can get plenty of enrichment for free at Khan Academy. Free lessons, free homework, even free tutoring

HS admission are school blind, but give bonus for personal adversity factors.

Your low farms school has a low rate of acceptance because they have a low rate of students applying.

What’s the difference of waitpool and waitlist?

Wait pool is for criteria based — there is not an [know] order they draw from when a spot opens

Wait list is for lottery based — the lower your number, the more likely to get in because it’s the order in which they offer open spots

What's criteria based? And lottery based?

Two different types of HS programs and how admission decisions are determines — if the application is reviewed to determine selection (criteria based) vs a random selection (lottery based).

FWIW, some students got in nothing with MAP M 280s and MAP R 250s
