The China system is based on a single exam that pretty much all students grind for.
The UK system is also based on performance on levels, exams and personal statement about why you are applying to that particular course of program (i.e. major). And the applicant is committed to that course for the next 3-4 years.
Also, public school means private there and the reverse. (Everything seems upside down there in language usage sometimes)

They didn't. China recently began implementing laws that allow for more rural representation in universities and support before the Gaokao. They also heavily exaggerate the "large preferences" given to public school kids in the UK. Elite UK unis read applications contextually to understand any fundamental barriers in academics and opportunities. It's not a "large" preference, just trying to give them a more equal opportunity.

That is some serious rationalization mom. Both examples cited sound like DEI to me.

You need to clarify this. In England a public school is what we in the US call a private school.


Needed to reverse it so people here understand the point.

Yeah public schools budget waste gazillions on special ed kids while bright kids are left alone to figure things out. Stinks for the smart but poor kids, but often their cognitive gifts do help them figure things out in the end. Very sub-optimal use of resources for any society.
