Interesting to hear about schools struggling with enrollment. We’re at a school that isn’t a “Big 3” or “Fab 5” or whatever, but our school has seen increased demand every year since the pandemic. They are at their enrollment cap each year and have a long waitlist. They’ve kept tuition increases at about 3% per year too. I thought this was the case at most private schools in this area since the pandemic, but I suppose that’s not the case.

Our tuition increase was 3.9%, and the letter literally said “in line with the historic increase of 3-5%”. I was on the Board of another school that increased it by 9 pct one year, but it was due to enrollment issues, and that was VERY poorly received.

OP, there is more to your school’s increase than just inflation.

It is nice that you donate, but a full pay kid does not leave a gap in the budget. That would just be bad business.

The budget gaps come from things like the financial aid program, expensive extracurricular like sports, drama, band, chorus, and so on. These are not central to education in core subjects and are huge expenses.

Donations fund these non essentials. Landscaping, financial aid, field trips, new athletic facilities, and so on.

Keep donating if you want to support these. But know that your full pay tuition is already going well beyond the cost for your one kid.

One small thing that might be of interest is also the base - 5 percent of 60K would mean 10 percent of 30K, so depending on the base, dollar value might matter, especially with multiple kids.

The idea that full pay tuition isn’t covering the cost to education one child, when it is $50k-$60k, is so absurd it is laughable.

Just do a napkin calculation of the average % tuition families are paying per kid with the generous financial aid programs these schools have.

The school budget includes lots of items like athletic facilities and coaching, development and alumni offices, performing arts facilities and faculty, summer camps, annual galas, etc. that have absolutely nothing to do with educating your child. You are not responsible for the overall school budget. Beyond that, financial aid is a huge drain on the school budget and decreases tuition revenue dramatically.

If you are pay full tuition, you are already paying more than the average kid. With financial aid, you are actually subsidizing the financial aid kids. Full pay tuition typically covers 20-25% tuition for someone else.
