I've side-eyed it unless cultural but, honestly, have been struggling to find a time to get my sporty 9 yo's pierced because we don't have 6 weeks when she isn't playing in a game that doesn't allow them. It's been a challenge.

I do not think it is "trashy" but I do believe it is child abuse. I am not sure why putting holes in a baby/child is not considered abuse. Is it a matter of where the hole is? I feel the same for circumcision. How is putting holes in a baby/child and/or cutting off pieces of them okay?

I had them done as a baby. You just put in tiny baby studs and it doesn’t catch in anything. I think it’s fine.

Exactly. Out of all the things to get upset about, my god. It’s tradition in my mom’s culture, and mine were done as a baby. Honestly never gave a crap about it, and none of my friends who’ve had it done as a baby were in care, either.

I think that’s controlling and perhaps abusive to make someone wait until 18 or 16 to pierce their ears. Were you not allowed to wear pants either? Attend high school?

It’s cultural. I’m Latina and this is the norm.

I wish I had done my daughter‘s. It didn’t occur to me even though mine are pierced. I had it done as a teenager and re-done as an adult and it was very annoying. DD, 9, wants hers pierced but is afraid of the procedure. If I’d had it done when she was younger we’d have bypassed this phase.

Oh well.

Yes slightly trashy but I get that it can be a cultural thing.

We waited until whenever my dd wanted it. She was 4 and it was such a fun trip. She was so excited. I’d never make my DDs wait until they begged like my friends parents did when they were 16. My younger dd is 4 and isn’t interested yet.

I'm Italian and my mom had my ears pierced when I was only a few months old. I think its a terrible idea.

The person should ask to get their ears pierced and that decision should not be made for them. Especially for vanity. Ugh.

Whatever (I personally think those big ol’ headband/bow things are trashier).
