Did you actually see this happening? It sounds like a complete exaggeration. I've been in different parts of Europe quite a few times, spending 99% of the time in very touristy destinations (so where people always say pickpocketing happens), and NEVER seen a pickpocket, and always carry a crossbody or backpack.

You don't travel much do you?

We were just in Italy three people on our tour were pick pocketed.

Paris two friends got their wallets stolen a month ago.

Barcelona same.

I would approach this a little different. What do you really need to put into the bag = size bag you want. Nothing bigger. imo. You'll be getting-out your phone a lot, to take pictures. Consider storing your phone separately. Will you have pants with zippered pockets? A jacket w/zippered pockets? If your purse is covered by something it's always safer.

I used this in Paris a couple of months ago and was very happy with it. I was specifically looking for a very lightweight crossbody with a top handle and this was perfect. I find that a cross body can get heavy on my neck and shoulders and I like to be able to lengthen the strap a bit and carry it on my wrist by the top handle sometimes in order to get the weight off my neck/shoulders. Sounds awkward but it works for me.
