Totally. Maybe OP's son doesn't enjoy shopping. And they are currently in FL. Can't exactly go out and try a bunch of boots. And it's a process and an investment, and mom doesn't want to waste money on something a teenage boy may not wear no matter what's good for him. Geesh.

If you aren’t wearing boots, you have to work a lot harder to pick around slush and snow even when snow has been cleared. If it’s actively snowing/sleeting/raining, you’ll have wet feet. You won’t die. This isn’t rocket science, and he’s not backpacking.

I went to a Northeast school that gets a ton of snow and did not have or need boots. The college did a tremendous job of keeping paths salted and clear. Sneakers were just fine.
