This is OP. I declined the offer. They really weren’t going to support me and my family in any meaningful way in our move, and whether or not it would have been a good move wasn’t worth the salary.

I was able to leverage the offer to get the same offer locally, and I’ll be starting there in two weeks.

Not a fan of recruiters in current market - or ever. Best to work directly with the company but that’s starting to be more rare.

What do people think of recruiters in today's market? Are they helpful or hurtful? I feel like they don't really do much and often complicate things rather than just working directly with an employer. Maybe if moving out of state? Otherwise, why would you need a recruiter for the line of work you know best? It also makes it more uncomfortable working directly with the employer or employee because everything has to go through this middle man.

They seem a little bit like realtors to me. You could use them, but you could also just work directly with the seller or buyer.

I've had recruiters tell me the same. Thank them and move on. Don't waste your time with opportunities that don't meet your requirements.
