Subject: Just found out my nephew isnt vaccinated at all
We have another friend couple whose grandson (who lived with them until his early 20s) is not vaccinated. We see them somewhat regularly, probably 4 times a year. Their grandson is only a couple of years younger than my oldest. I never worried about it or restricted contact with them. No one else in our friend group with kids did either. We've known them for over 20 years now.

I’m really happy your kids are perfectly healthy, and I sincerely hope they remain that way. Do you realize that one of the factors that has probably contributed to their health is herd immunity, and that it’s breaking down?
A vaccine won’t make a difference to a child who is never exposed to the disease it was designed to prevent. Because the vast majority of people are vaccinated with highly effective vaccines, your kids have basically been encircled by a fence creating a wide buffer zone making it unlikely that their immune system would ever be confronted with the disease.
However, each person who isn’t vaccinated creates a hole in that fence and reduces the safety zone around your children (just as their lack of vaccination does to others). There won’t be a problem, unless the disease is able to exploit one of those holes so that the chain of exposed patients pierces that safety zone. Should that happen, your kids immune systems will have to fight off that disease without the preparation a vaccine could have provided them.

Thanks for your concern but we know what we’re doing. My husband grew up the same way we’re raising our kids and rarely ever got sick. They’ll be okay.

Adding- at some point I do plan to give some additional information about the increase of measles in the US, because I think people are perfectly happy to have other people protect their children through herd immunity but if they understand the risk of getting measles is increasing they may be willing to vaccinate. It’s the difference between being willing to engage in public health and being willing to take on a tiny tiny bit of risk of an adverse reaction for your own benefit.

One of my siblings does not vaccinate their kids. It is very sad and crazy to me, but since my kids are older and fully vaccinated we continue to see them. If I had an infant or a child with a compromised immune system we would not.

I would make the decision never to have your children anywhere near mine, and I’d tell all the other parents why as well.

Like I said before, we believe in parental freedom (including yours) and do all natural parenting.
So your kids will consort primarily with unvaxed kids of other idiot parents, and likely contract something easily avoidable.

+1 to all this. Dr.Beachgem is the best. She's also personally seen the outcomes of parents refusing vaccines or vitamin K shots, she knows just how horrible it can be.

People who do not vaccinate are not good parents or good humans and they are fools.
My best friend growing up didn't get her full vaccines until she was 12, because was diagnosed with cancer as a baby and couldn't have vaccines until she was totally done with chemo. The world used to be a lot safer for people like my friend. I really feel for parents of immunocomprimised kids who now have to navigate a world that is much more dangerous and cavalier about the lives of their kids.

People are now dying from measles because we have lost herd immunity in some communities. You vaccinate for your kids and for everyone else’s. Vaccination is probably the greatest single achievement in public medicine ever. You also are operating under the flawed assumption that by opting out of vaccination, you have opted out of risk. That is not true - you have opted into the greater risk pool of what happens when the disease enters back into the population because you are all selfish and ignorant and your unprotected kids pick it up. You have actually taken on a higher level of risk. Exemptions must be reserved for those for whom there is an actual scientific reason why they can’t have one. Everyone else gets it so that we can get to herd immunity so that the discussion of “just how bad are the measles” goes back to being a theoretical one.
And your kids are healthy until they aren’t.
