He should email the coach and ask.

girls teams will be varsity - high level travel players, jv - rec and low level travel - grade won't matter as much as girls are mostly fully grown at 14 so age is less of an issue. many rec and low level travel girls won't ever make varsity especailly at the better high schools (oakton, yorktown, indy, dominion, champe, etc)

yep, that's the exception though.
he probably also knows the coach somehow. Politics plays into that a lot.

i am curious as well.

The target should be sub 6 minutes or less with the ability to maintain a good practice pace after the run. The times will very between boys and girls. Remember for soccer, it's not just how fast they run it but what can they are to do after the run.

Tryouts are to start the end of February 2026 with most schools holding interest meetings and events since early fall 2025. The 2026 season starts the 1st week of March. Parents and students will need to monitor the schools social media and athletic calendar. If you haven't done so already, make sure you have completed the VHSL Athletic Participation/Parent Consent/Evaluation Form and have that ready. You will need to get a physical and see your doctor prior to attending any event.

Although we are not fcps, that time seems quick for a baseline. Our team had a requirement of 8 minutes or less. Most of the better kids ran it in 6:30 or less but 6 mins as the minimum standard seems aggressive.

My older son played basketball and for tryouts, they were expected to be under 6:30 for a mile for the JV team. I think the freshman team was 7:00.

Not true about GK.

Anonymous wrote:Our HS has over 100 tryout for 25ish spots, many of which are returning players. No juniors or seniors on Varsity, junior Varsity is mostly sophomores with a handful of freshmen. First day cuts are based on your speed running a mile. Not great in my opinion, but they have to get the numbers down, and they use fitness as a first cut measure.

Over the course of a week, more get cut every day, until they come to the final squad. FYI, some who played JV freshman year will get cut sophomore year, and some who played Varsity junior year will get cut senior year. Best chances to be guaranteed (although really there are no guarantees) to make the team are being a GK - they are always needed, including multiple backups, because they get injured.

Interesting, our large school had a lot of juniors on JV last year and only a handful of freshmen. I think its tough for freshman boys to be expected to physically compete with juniors. Spring semester juniors are basically fully grown adult men.

High school tryout dates are not reliant on Instagram so not sure what you’re referencing. High schools often have an athletic office where a student can find out about various sports and tryout dates. They can email the coach, ask any older friends, etc.

There is no requirement for social media to get information.
