This. When you say "Springfield" you are talking about a big area. You cannot paint it with one brush. Daventry and the area around the golf course and west (Huntsman area) are definitely not a "bootyhole". The South Run area is not a "bootyhole" by any stretch.

If it walking distance or a 5 minute drive to the Springfield Country club, which is a 5 minute walk from the local high school, then it is West Springfield and it is a great place to live. St. Bernadette Catholic Church is roughly the northern boundary of West Springfield.

If it is walking distance or a 5 minute drive to the Paper Moon strip club, vape shops and adult video store, which are roughly 5 minutes from the local high school, and sits within ear shot of the Mixing Bowl, then it is Springfield proper, which definitely has room for improvement.

Probably zoning away the giant strip club and nearby adult video store from such close proximity to family housing and the local schools would be a great first step for central Springfield.

Springfield (immediate Mixing Bowl neighborhood) or West Springfield (section between Old Keene Mill/Fairfax County Parkway/Greeley)?

Springfield is mostly commercial with a mall, plenty of restaurants, dense housing and mediocre schools.

West Springfield is almost entirely residential single family homes with nice sized wooded lots, parks everywhere, very few restaurants and exceptional schools.

The Springfield metro station is by far the sketchiest looking metro station in NOVA.

We do need these less attractive places for people like the housekeeper and the UVA grad to live in though.

City of Alexandria is embarrassing to admit living as Woodbridge, 7 Corners, the crappy part of Mclean, Reston, Herndon, and Haymarket/Gainsville/Manassas.

It’s definitely in the bottom rung with Woodbridge, dunfries, manassas, rt1 corridor, falls church near 7 corners area.

Hoodbridge is the crotch of northern VA. Horrific traffic and ugly strip malls.

Springfield encompasses 4 zip codes (22150, 22151, 22152, and 22153). It is over 28 square miles. I think the OP is mainly thinking about 22150, which is central Springfield. Central Springfield can look daunting and sprawling and old near the 495/395 interchange. It is full of post WWII housing. We should count our blessings that this area exists. We need all kinds of areas and people to make the DMV function. That housing still functions for people. People like to dismiss Lewis and Edison high schools, but quite honestly many people have gone on to pretty good lives after getting their starts there. Sometimes adversity will make you tough and give you the drive to succeed. I would not dismiss people just because they live or lived there. Ask me how I know.

This is pretty accurate. West Springfield can literally be one street over from Fairfax Station in some areas and Burke in others.
