The UK police cannot hold someone indefinitely without charge. Typically, they have to charge within 24 hours or else release (although the period can be a couple days for really serious cases, such as terrorism). Withholding the name inhibits speculation and rumor if that person is then released without charge.
But then, you love a bit of speculation and rumor, don’t you!
