Funny--we know someone from two years ago who applied ED 1 to Middlebury and was rejected (not even deferred), then accepted ED 2 at Bowdoin. You never know.

A few years ago my kid was deferred ED1 from Midd and accepted to Amherst and Midd RD and dinged by Bowdoin. It’s impossible to know what SLACs are looking for to round out their class in RD.

Counselor is an idiot. Go down a notch for ED2. Lots of great SLACs with a real ED2 advantage - Midd, Grinnell etc.

Agree, but essential to have RD targets and safeties they like

From my perspective JHU and Bowdoin are completely different schools, having been to both campuses. I would think an application that is a good fit for Bowdoin might not scream good fit for JHU.

I’d just ask my DC at this point where they most want to go to college. As long as the stats support it, have DC take their shot in ED2.

I can see why your counselor recommended JHU, it made sense. If deferred from JHU, Rice is a better fit than any LAC. The thing is Rice gets even more competitive at ED2, with a 6% admit.

JHU and Bowdoin are both super competitive. But they sit on different axes, fit is very important. Hopefully your DC’s EC is a better match with Bowdoin. I don’t see how “super high score” moves the needle at Bowdoin, they have been test optional for a long time. If your DC doesn’t have something other than score and rigor, he may fare even worse at Bowdoin.

JHU. He thought DC's super high score and rigor would be more helpful at JHU than Bowdoin. It's only “strategic” from the school's perspective.

OK, this makes at least some perverted sense, in that Johns Hopkins is an easier admit in ED (the downside being that you would actually have to go there; it really isn’t a top 10 school, US News aside). But if it is a “no” from JHU, that is all the more reason to go down from Bowdoin if there is a strong ED2 alternative. Bowdoin is a tougher admit ED2 than ED1 (because of applicants like you, and Bowdoin is most like Amherst and Williams, which have only ED1, so you will get some of their rejects as well, not to mention the Ivies).
